"Make music now" with Kaossilator Pro (even if you are not a musician!!).
Like another reviewer here at Amazon, I also got the original kaossilator a couple of years ago and started to spend a lot of time with it. I was reading an article named "Make Music Now" on a magazine related to electronic and computer music when I first learned about the kaossilator.
I'm not a musician and, for many reasons, I never allowed myself to learn music. I always had a passion for music, specially with lots of synths like Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield, Airsculpture, RedShift, FSOL, Vangelis, Synergy, Passport, Jean-Luc Ponty, etc, etc. I have always been a passive listener, until now.
When the new kaossilator pro came out I went right away to the youtube website to watch all those people showing their experiences and amazing creativity about this new musical instrument from Korg. Few months later I got my kaossilator pro.
Both devices (Kaossilator and Kaossilator Pro) definitely are not toys. They are a very powerful, dynamic and portable...

My favorite peice of gear I have ever tried
I will admit, I've never been a big MIDI user; if I have to access sub-menus to change MIDI modes then I loose interest, unplug the MIDI and just experiment raw. I'm addressing a bit of the cons first here. Syncopation issues are the biggest problem with this unit. It works so hard to keep it's sampled pads in synch with each other, that it fails to provide ample tools for syncing this device to nearly any other (including other Korg devices).
For instance, I can sample a drum loop on this unit, then run the audio line to my KP3 and resample the same loop at the same tempo on my KP3. Then turn off the original loop on the Kaossilator pro, and in a matter of seconds when you turn the Kaossilator loop back on it will already be out of sync with the exact same loop sampled at the same tempo in the same brand's similar device. Notice however, that I am NOT taking off a star for this.
I am also NOT removing a star for the ridiculously short loop time. That does not...
From a rank beginner's viewpoint
I'm not a musician and I wanted something to start out with that was both small and easy to use. I also wanted an electronic instrument that would let me make the crossover to a pro-level synth keyboard in the future. After looking at the reviews here and playing with the K-Pro at the store, this is what I settled on. Strictly from a newbie viewpoint, the K-Pro has several clear pros and cons.
Pro:
- It's easy to use out of the box. Just plug it in to the AC and attach a pair of headphones (1/4" jack), select a rhythm voice and start recording. You only get 2 bars (a couple seconds) in the loop, but you can lay down multiple layers (adjusting sound level of each layer with the program volume control) and then you'll have something to jam to. While the description says there are 200 programmed sounds, about 20 of them (vocorder) require that you plug in an external source, like a mike or another instrument). And the 20+ SFX sounds are too gimmicky for regular music...
Product Features :
- KAOSS X-Y touchpad offers intuitive, realtime control
- 200 sounds covering modern synth sounds such as lead and bass, and diverse acoustic sounds from piano to trumpet and beyond
- PCM samples provide dramatic drum kits and ready to rock percussion patterns
- Vocoder programs deliver scintillating vocal effects
- Access up to eight of your favorite sounds instantly using the assignable Program Memory buttons
